A Decentralized Grid

When electric utility infrastructure is destroyed in the modern era, it makes financial and environmental sense to shift away from centralized fossil fuel generation and vulnerable above ground transmission lines. Self-contained, decentralized generation through solar panels combined with electricity storage using batteries and backup generators can greatly reduce the load on the public grid and dramatically improve survivability and speed of recovery after a hurricane.
